New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) are helping New York State build a robust charging network so that electric vehicle (EV) owners can easily travel across our service area. New York State has thousands of public chargers available and more are being built every day.
Take advantage of this charging network and explore all the NYSEG and RG&E service area has to offer. From Western New York to the Finger Lake region to the Adirondack Park and the Hudson Valley—there is something for everyone.
Here are just a few of the day trip options you can take in your EV this fall:
Orchard Park is a vintage American village about a half hour drive from downtown Buffalo. It’s perhaps most well-known for being the home of the Buffalo Bills, but whether you visit for a game or not, there are also a wide variety of attractions to explore. Stop by one of the local restaurants to try some of Buffalo’s world-famous chicken wings or visit Chestnut Ridge Park to see the Eternal Flame Falls, a naturally occurring flame that flickers in a waterfall. There are numerous public EV chargers available throughout Orchard Park as well as in the neighboring town of Hamburg.
Rochester is the third largest city in New York State and offers a variety of music, theatre, food, history and nature for visitors to explore—from the city’s many festivals to the historic Erie Canal and Genesee River that flows through downtown. Rochester is also home to two national historic landmarks—the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House and George Eastman Museum—and The Strong National Museum of Play, which is the nation’s second largest children’s museum. While you’re in town, be sure to try Rochester’s unique specialty: the trash plate or “Garbage Plate.” There are many public EV chargers available throughout the city for you to take advantage of while enjoying all that Rochester has to offer.

Another destination in the Finger Lakes, the City of Ithaca is known for its art influence and has many museums and galleries. It is also home to the Ithaca Commons, a four-block, pedestrian-only section of downtown filled with stores and restaurants. This is where the City hosts many events, such as the Downtown Ithaca Apple Harvest Festival in the fall. There are many public EV chargers available throughout the city and on the campuses of Cornell University and Ithaca College.
Located in northern New York, the Saranac River runs through the town of Plattsburgh and is part of the North Forest Canoe Trail—a 740-mile inland water trail. Plattsburgh has a long military history and was a battleground through three wars, including the War of 1812 when Great Britain attempted to invade the U.S. via Plattsburgh. The Plattsburgh Air Force Base is the longest active military installation in the U.S. and dates back to the early 1800s. Beyond this history, Plattsburgh has countless recreational trails, parks and beaches. Additionally, the Adirondacks in the fall is one of the highest producing apple areas in the country and offers a great view of fall colors! There are many public chargers available throughout the area for you to keep your EV charged and ready to go.
The Village of Watkins Glen sits in the heart of the Finger Lakes along the southern short of Seneca Lake. The area offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the region’s natural beauty—whether you do so on the water or by visiting the famous Watkins Glen State Park, which has 19 waterfalls along it’s two-mile course that follows the glen’s steam. The region also offers agritourism, including apple farms, farmers markets and local-crafted cheese. To charge your EV, there is a public charger located in the village and a second charger is available within five miles in the Village of Burdett.

The Town of Yorktown, NY in Northern Westchester County has been dubbed a Monarch Butterfly Town thanks to its new gardens that serve as a butterfly sanctuary at Willow Park. These will sustain monarchs as they migrate north and south to their summer and winter habitats. Yorktown also offers many escapes into nature and opportunities to leaf peep, including John E. Hand Memorial Park at Bald Mountain and Turkey Mountain, whose summit offers views of Croton Reservoir and dam, Bear Mountain, the Hudson River, and the New York City skyline. There are EV chargers at Staples Plaza available for public use as well as some in the neighboring city of Peekskill and town of Cortlandt.
No matter which of these adventures you choose, New York’s EV charging network will be close by. Find an EV charging station near your destination by using NYSEG or RG&E’s EV Charging Station locator.
