Avangrid Networks companies in Maine and Connecticut have announced new union contracts, after ratifying agreements that will determine salaries and benefits for approximately 780 employees for years to come.
In Maine, Central Maine Power (CMP) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1837 announced a four-year labor contract that includes updates to wages, incentives, and other policies for employees. Local 1837 represents more than 650 CMP employees across operations, customer service and professional positions. Both parties agreed that customers will benefit from the new contract that is designed to attract and retain talent.
“Our employees routinely go above and beyond to take great care of our customers, especially during storms, and we are pleased to have reached a fair agreement that recognizes and appreciates their commitment while safely meeting our customers’ needs,” said David Flanagan, Executive Board Chair of CMP.
“Our members are proud of the important work they do serving CMP’s many thousands of customers, and this agreement demonstrates that the company recognizes the value of our commitment to them,” said Tony Sapienza, IBEW Local 1837 Business Manager. “We appreciate CMP addressing issues that will help attract and retain scarce line worker talent that all utility companies are competing to attract.”
In Connecticut, Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG) and United Steelworkers Local 12000 last month agreed on a three-year contract that provides for annual wage increases for union members and improvements to disability benefits, providing better ongoing coverage for employees. It also changes responsibilities for certain roles to allow for increased operational flexibility.
The agreement was ratified after months of negotiations, which due to COVID safety precautions were carried out using a virtual mediated platform — a first for the company. Local 12000 represents about 130 SCG employees.
“The ratification of this agreement is an important step in finalizing the terms of a deal that truly benefits employees, the company and SCG’s customers. Throughout the process, company and union leadership continued to work on and expand their partnership,” SCG President and CEO Frank Reynolds and Local 12000 President Mike Wargo said in a joint statement.
