For Michael Roden, an Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist at NYSEG, the impact Stand With Me has had on him and his family can only be described in one way: life-changing.

Michael’s wife Rebecca returned from her military service with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. Rebecca, like many of her fellow military service members, is one of an estimated 30-35% of vets reporting a mental health condition requiring treatment, yet fewer than 50% of veterans in need – including a growing number of women veterans – receive treatment. This has led to issues like high rates of poverty, homelessness and suicide among veterans.

Thanks to Stand With Me, a unique organization dedicated to providing owner-led intensive service dog training for veterans in the Binghamton, NY area, Rebecca was able to receive the help she needs – with her very own German Shepherd named “Ruger”.

Led by Founder and Director Francess “Myrph” McMahon, Stand With Me opens doors to veterans in need who may be locked out of support through traditional channels, with high costs and years-long waitlists for trained service animals. By training strong veteran/dog teams together, Stand With Me provides companionship, resiliency in the face of often invisible challenges – and above all, the confidence PTSD and other service-related disabilities once stole.

On Veterans Day, and on every other day, Stand With Me gives back to the few who sacrifice for all.
