September is sustainability month, so let’s meet Cliff Cronan, a UI engineer who works in Orange, Conn. and is also the leader of the AVANGRID Sustainability Team. The 40+ volunteer members of the team work on sustainability issues like recycling and electric vehicles and help employees adopt sustainable practices at work and home.

Q: How long have you been with AVANGRID?

A: Just shy of 15 years.

Q: What do you love about your job?

A: Helping customers. It’s very rewarding to be a liaison between the customer and the company. Also the people I work with are great.

Q: How would you sum up what you do?

A: I design and manage underground electrical services projects for our commercial customers. From designing the service, to inspecting the work in the field, to writing up legal documents and billing, to updating our maps and records, to finally ensuring the meter is installed at the end of the project. I also lead AVANGRID’s Sustainability Team.

Q: How do you live our values in your everyday work?

A: Collaboration with contractors, electricians, excavators, electrical inspectors, our crews, etc. is crucial to completing projects successfully. Being agile is also critical in this role as construction jobs are dynamic and can change in an instant due to field conditions. Every day brings new challenges with construction projects so you always have to be ready to adapt to change. I am fortunate to be able apply the sustainable values of the company as part of AVANGRID’s Sustainability Team. We have been able to effect real change in the company such as being directly involved with all the company cafes now using recyclable materials, introducing the company to our Electric Vehicle fleet through our EV fairs, hosting lighting fairs to allow employees to purchase energy efficient lighting at reduced prices, working with the cafes to give coffee discounts for employees who bring their own mug, and many more.

Q: What do you see as the biggest opportunity in your role?

A: Continuing to effect real change in the company and also in employees’ personal lives through the Sustainability Team.
